Newcastle Airport should develop links to America, China and India to take advantage of its unique potential in growing the economy of the North, a new report has said.

The influential Transport for the North (TfN) group – which brings together business and council leaders from across the north to influence the Government – says the airport “has a particularly important role within the North’s wider offer in providing international connectivity for businesses and entrepreneurs based in the North East, Cumbria and southern Scotland”.

The report envisages new routes being developed to Hong Kong and Beijing in China, to Delhi in India, and to Atlanta and Toronto in North America in what is described as a “transformational scenario”.

To achieve the hoped-for growth, however, improvements to roads near the airport, upgrades to the Tyne and Wear Metro and a direct rail link to the airport should be also be built, TfN says.

The recommendations are part of a wider report which says that better connected airports and ports in the North could release massive potential benefits for trade and business growth.

Improving international links could see 75m passengers travelling to and from the region each year by 2050, while better road and rail links to and from the region’s ports could also see more freight being shipped in and out to boost the Northern economy.

John Cridland, chair of Transport for the North (TfN), said: “It’s clear that the north’s ports and airports are key economic assets for the region with nearly 40m passengers flying from the region each year and around a third of all UK freight using northern ports.

“Yet we know that the lack of access to and from our ports and airports is holding them back, with congestion on our roads and railways making it difficult for people and goods to reach international gateways.”

Figures obtained by the think-tank IPPR show that the North East has the second highest ratio of high-growth enterprises for the number of businesses in the region.

Despite that appetite for growth in the North East, many forms of business support – including equity, bank lending and Government grants – are disproportionately going to London and the South East.

IPPR is now calling on the Government to give the British Business Bank a specific objective of supporting businesses outside of London to kickstart the work of small, high growth firms across the country.

It also wants a review of the Enterprise Investment Scheme and Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme to make sure high growth businesses outside of London, which find it hardest to get finance, benefit from public support.

Izzy Hatfield, economic analyst at IPPR, said: “This research challenges the idea that only London is the crucible of our best and most exciting small, high growth businesses.

“In fact they exist across the UK. Dollar exchange rate to peso today Everyone recognises the importance of supporting them to deliver a dynamic post-Brexit economy, but we show that the Government needs to do much more to help those outside of London access the finance they need to grow.”
