Should a buyer take Intel’s word that the problem occurs so infrequently as to be irrelevant? Or should a prudent buyer play it safe and buy a Macintosh from Apple Computer Inc., the only PC manufacturer that does not use Intel chips at all?

As customers sift through these possibilities, dealers and analysts do not necessarily expect an overall slowdown in PC sales. But many assume that there will be a temporary shift away from Pentium-based machines, at least until Intel has made much clearer how it intends to solve the problem.

"For every call Intel gets, the channel is getting 10 or 20," said Robert Faletra, editor in chief of Computer Reseller News, a trade publication jpy usd chart. The "channel" refers to computer distributors and retailers.

"It’s their reputation as well," Mr. Faletra added. "If they recommend that a customer not replace the chip, and something happens, who’s going to get the call?"

For buyers, deciding whether to avoid the Pentium or embrace it warts and all depends on how soon they need a machine, whether they need the somewhat higher performance the Pentium offers compared with a 486 chip and whether their intended use for the machine involves the heavy number-crunching in which the Pentium’s errors are most likely to occur.

The decision also depends on whether buyers want or need to work primarily with the Microsoft Windows software operating system. Users who are not bound to Windows might play it safe by selecting an Apple machine that uses Macintosh software and a non-Intel chip.

Many experts advocate that the user who needs an Intel-based computer, but can get by with a 486-series chip, should buy a 486 machine the box nyc. And those buyers determined to go with a Pentium, experts said, should insist on a written guarantee from the seller that the chip will be replaced when Intel has chips available without the flaw cnn money futures market. While industry figures are imprecise, most analysts say that home and small-business users have been the main customers for Pentium computers since the machines came onto the market in May 1993. Consumers on the other hand tend to keep their machines longer before replacing them, and so are more likely to buy the most powerful machines they can afford out of fear of premature obsolescence. And Pentium computers, available for less than $2,000, cost only a few hundred dollars more than comparably equipped 486-chip machines.

"Corporate America has not been buying Pentium in volume," said John McKenna, president of Entex Information Systems Inc., the nation’s largest seller of PC’s to corporations. "For us, it’s less than 5 percent of sales flower quotes shakespeare. For small businesses, though, the problems have already occurred, and some were venting their anger yesterday on the Internet, the global web of computer networks.

"I can’t believe that Intel says it’s not that important to most users," wrote Joey Jarosz, who identified himself as the president of Hot-N-GUI Inc., a Silicon Valley software consulting company. "I use my Pentium machine — or I used to till yesterday — to do my company’s bookkeeping. I don’t think the I.R.S. would accept ‘My Pentium made me do it.’ "

Among computer makers, a big beneficiary of I.B.M.’s announcement on Monday may be one of its chief rivals, Compaq Computer, the overall sales leader in PC’s rmb to usd calculator. Like I.B.M., Compaq has not emphasized Pentium sales, choosing instead to primarily push 486-based machines.

But computer retail stores, and direct marketers like Dell and Gateway 2000, which have sold most of the Pentium machines to date, said yesterday that their sales remained strong.

"We’ve sold more Pentium-based PC’s than any company in the U.S. market, and before this story broke in the news, we had not received one call from a customer complaining of any errors related to a flaw," Gateway 2000’s chairman and chief executive, Theodore W binary to english. But at least one Gateway 2000 customer disputed that version of events. "I called them last Monday, the 5th, and said I had verified this problem," said Charles A. Leiwant, of Hanover, N.J., who was using his Pentium personal computer at home to calculate returns on commercial real estate owned by his family. "I’m doing some financial calculations based on ‘net present values’ and I’m not sure how the computer does that.

"I don’t know if this is something I need to worry about, so I’m using my 386 now," Mr. Leiwant said, referring to his other, much older Intel-based PC. "They said they’d have somebody call me back, and it’s been eight days now."
