NEW LONDON — In an age when Rite Aid, Walmart and Walgreen’s have sprouted in nearly every community, one local pharmacy is bucking the trend and remains independent.

Colonial Pharmacy has found success by affiliating with HealthMart, a network of independent pharmacists that negotiate with pharmaceutical companies to keep drug costs comparable to the chains and help navigate more than 300 insurance plans.

Glenn Perreault, who co-owns Colonial Pharmacy with fellow pharmacist Randy Doerr, believes it isn’t just about competing with mail-order services and chain pharmacies.

Bill Faccone, who founded Colonial Pharmacy in 1967, was fond of recounting the day a customer came in and asked if by chance the store stocked copper pipe of a particular length canadian dollar indian rupee exchange rate. The facility will meet all United States Pharmacopeia 800 standards for prescription compounding, to meet the unique needs of patients who otherwise might not have access to required medicine in the right concentration or dosage.

The new building will have two compounding laboratories equipped with specialized air exchange and filtrations systems binary quiz. One will be bio-isolation to allow drugs classified as hazardous by the Food and Drug Administration, such as those used to treat cancer, and male and female hormones to be safely compounded.

Zero-down financing was obtained through Live Oak Bank in Wilmington, N.C., which has expertise in specific industries that enables the bank to lend to business owners who haven’t had access to capital in the past.

According to Perreault, Live Oak Bank concentrates on serving the professional-services industry and is knowledgeable about pharmacy-related businesses.

At least three to four times a year, Colonial receive letters from national pharmacy chains inquiring whether the pharmacists would be interested in selling, and two or three times annually a representative from one or two of the largest retail pharmacies come in to try to broker a sale.

Perreault said both he and Doerr are committed to keeping Colonial Pharmacy local. Perreault said he is confident that when he and his business partner retire, they will be able to pass the pharmacy and variety store on to someone just as devoted to serving the greater New London community.
